	FACULTY OF BUSINESS & ECONOMICS
	DEPARTMENT OF MARKETING AND MANAGEMENT
	BUS 201 - ASSESSMENT GUIDE
	General Assessment Information
General guide to how to submit report
Submit a hard copy to BESS and online before the deadline. Submission on an earlier
date to your tutor is acceptable.
Submit an electronic copy to Turnitin on iLearn for plagiarism checking (NOTE:
electronic submission is NOT a substitute for the hard copy, if we do not receive a hard
copy from you by the due date, you will receive zero marks for the assessment)
The marking rubrics and peer assessment forms for each assessment are available at the
	end of this document
Remember your team report must be your own work. Therefore, your assignment must be
submitted to Turnitin on iLearn. A link to Turnitin and instructions on how to submit an
assignment to Turnitin will be provided through iLearn.
Please note that when submitting your essay and report you must include the following:
	• Cover sheet with student/s name, student ID number, tutorial/class enrolment number,
	tutorial day and time and Turnitin receipt number;
	• Turnitin receipt email. This email provides time and date proof of assignment
submission to the Turnitin system; and
	• Turnitin receipt number on the cover sheet of your assignment
Any submission not containing a student cover sheet with a Turnitin receipt number, a
print out of the Turnitin Receipt email stating time/date of submission will not be marked.
In terms of the report, each team (and each member) is responsible for assessing its level of
plagiarism. Although you can submit the report to Turnitin as many times as you like before
the due date, only the final submission will count to Turnitin.

	1. ASSESSED COURSEWORK
The individual assignment is worth 20% of your final grade.
Submission: A hard copy must be submitted to your tutor in class at the time of your
tutorial for each week of assessment.
Extension: No extensions for this assessment task will be granted except for cases
in which an application for Disruption to Studies is made and approved
Penalties: No extensions will be granted. There will be a deduction of 10% of the
total available marks made from the total awarded mark for each 24 hour period or
part thereof that the submission is late (for example, 25 hours late in submission –
20% penalty). This penalty does not apply for cases in which an application for
disruption of studies is made and approved. No submission will be accepted after
	solutions have been posted.
Each student is expected to submit tutorial coursework throughout the semester. This
comprises of weekly short answer and essay questions as well as any further tutorial
assessment. From the assigned coursework two random weeks will be assessed of which the
best one (20% each totalling 20%) will form your final mark. The required format for the
assignment is either short answer or essay.
Coursework will be handed in to your tutor during your tutorial in multiple weeks throughout
the semester. This may follow different formats and will be random in nature i.e. different
from one tutorial to the next. It is expected that you prepare for each tutorial by attending
lectures, completing readings and doing any required homework.
Please note that you will not simply be provided a mark for submitting work. The work
should be of an appropriate academic standard and will be marked accordingly.
	4
	2. REPORT & PRESENTATION
Submission: A hard copy of the report must be submitted to BESS by Week 10
	- Monday 4pm. Submission on an earlier date to your tutor is acceptable. You will
need to submit a soft copy to Turnitin on iLearn for plagiarism checking (NOTE:
electronic submission is NOT a substitute for the hard copy, if we do not receive a
hard copy from you by the due date, you will be penalised as per the guidelines
below). The presentation component will be submitted in tutorials in Weeks 10-13.
The exact time and date of your presentation will be worked out with your tutor.
The mark is divided up between the report and presentation contributions. The
report is worth 20 marks (20%). It is due in Week 10 Monday 4pm to BESS and
via Turnitin. The presentation is worth 20 marks (20%). It is due from Week 10-
	13. The exact time and date of your presentation will be organised with your
	tutor.
	REPORT
In the same team as you joined at the beginning of semester you will develop a 4000 word
written REPORT on the details below:
You have been asked to write a report outlining how Australia would be able to build
sustainable, national competitive advantage in one of the following industries.
	-  Business consulting industry
	-  Construction industry
	-  Agricultural industry
	-  Video games industry
	-  Pharmaceutical industry
	-  International education
	-  Fashion industry
	-  Airline industry
	-  Film industry
	-  Retail banking industry
	-  Investment banking industry
	-  Travel industry
Your report should draw upon Porter’s theory of national competitive advantage as the basis
	of your analysis.
	5
In the body of your report you will need to provide the following
	-  Brief outline of the key theory
	-  Outline the current position and issues of the Australian industry you have
	chosen
	-  Outline and justify what industry strategies and government policies you would
recommend be adopted to improve Australia’s position in the industry for the
	short and long term.
As this is a team exercise all members of the team are expected to contribute actively and
substantially. While it is understood that some members of the team may have different input
in the research and the written component the team will be required to acknowledge that all
team members have given quality time to the project.
While writing your report, you should incorporate relevant theories and concepts to justify your
arguments. Remember to acknowledge your sources throughout the paper using the Harvard
	referencing system (in-text referencing).
The report is to be typed and 1.5 spaced (a standard 12 point font should be used). It should
be checked for spelling, consistency and clarity of expression.
Your report should incorporate at least 20 different references. These can be sourced from
	the following:
	 Academic articles
	 Relevant textbooks
	 Periodicals
	 Newspapers
	 Relevant online sources
The 20 references need to be evenly balanced between these five resource options.
Examples of all of these reference options are detailed in this outline.
	PRESENTATION
Based on the report each team is expected to present their findings. Each member of the team
will be marked on their individual presentation i.e. not as a team. Although your presentation
will be presented as a team you will be individually assessed based on the marking criteria
	attached to this assessment guide.
It is expected that the team covers the following key areas of the report
	-  Outline the current position and issues of the Australian industry you have
	chosen
	-  Outline and justify what industry strategies and government policies you would
recommend be adopted to improve Australia’s position in the industry for the
	short and long term.
	6
Each team member will give a presentation that will not exceed 3 minutes. There will be an
emphasis on your presentation style and delivery of content.
Presentations will start in Week Ten in tutorials and it is expected that you will provide a
printed copy of the slides to the tutor along with the presentation. Although your presentation
will be presented as a team you will be individually assessed based on the marking criteria
attached to the unit guide. It is expected that every team member participates equally.
	REPORT AND PRESENTATION
No extensions will be granted. Late tasks will be accepted up to 72 hours after the submission
deadline. There will be a deduction of 10% of the total available marks made from the total
awarded mark for each 24 hour period or part thereof that the submission is late (for example,
25 hours late in submission – 20% penalty). This penalty does not apply for cases in which an
application for unavoidable disruption is made and approved.
All team work is peer moderated (see Appendix 1)
Following the Group Report and Presentation each student will submit a peer evaluation
assessment for each member in their team (including themselves). This will then allow a peer
factor to be allocated to the Team’s raw score for each individual student, allowing a dispersion
of marks within the same team. This peer factor is kept confidential. (See Appendix 1)
	4. FINAL EXAM
The FINAL EXAM is worth 40% of your final grade
The final exam will be set during the exam period. The format of the final exam will be outlined
in the final weeks of the course.
You are expected to present yourself for examination at the time and place designated in the
University Examination Timetable. The timetable will be available in Draft form
approximately eight weeks before the commencement of the examinations and in Final form
approximately four weeks before the commencement of the examinations.
	http://www.timetables.mq.edu.au/exam
The only exception to not sitting an examination at the designated time is because of
documented illness or unavoidable disruption. In these circumstances you may wish to
consider applying for Unavoidable Disruption. The University’s policy on the unavoidable
	disruption process is available at
	http://students.mq.edu.au/student_admin/exams/disruption_to_studies/
If a Supplementary Examination is granted as a result of the unavoidable disruption process
the examination will be scheduled after the conclusion of the official examination period.
(Individual Faculties may wish to signal when the Faculties’ Supplementary Exams are
	normally scheduled.)
	7
The Macquarie university examination policy details the principles and conduct of
examinations at the University. The policy is available at:
	http://www.mq.edu.au/policy/docs/examination/policy.htm

	APPENDIX 1
	STUDENT EVALUATION OF MEMBER PARTICIPATION
In order to encourage equal participation on the part of all team members, each team will
complete and turn in an evaluation of the team member (only for the Major Project team reports
and presentations). This evaluation will indicate the percentage of contribution of team
members to the team’s over-all performance. An evaluation must accompany each written
research project. Use the following format:
	Tutorial Instructor________________________________________________________
	Tutorial Team No_______  Date: ____________________
	Team Project Name:______________________________________Mark___________
Each student should give each team member (including themselves) a participation mark out
of 100%. Individual marks are calculated by multiplying the paper grade by the percentage
awarded by peers. For example, if Joe Black was awarded 90% for his contribution to the
research project and his team received 36 out of 40 points for the project, Joe’s individual mark
would be 32.4%. Another student, awarded 100%, would receive 36 points.
Students can give each of the team members 100%. If this is done, each student receives the
mark that was awarded to the total project (in the above example, 36 points). No student should
receive 0% unless the student really did nothing to contribute to the completion of the project
(for example, did not go to meetings, did not complete assigned tasks, and did not contribute
to the conceptualisation of the project).
In completing this form you should take into account:
	1. Willingness of the individual to carry out jobs assigned
	2. Ability of the individual to meet deadlines
	3. Co-operation with other team members
	4. Quality of the individual’s work

Team Agreement - Team Project/Presentation Formation
In order to encourage commitment on the part of all team members, each team member will
sign this Team Agreement which defines how the team will operate during the conduct of the
Team Project. Each member of the team is to sign below to indicate that they will abide by the
conditions of the agreement as set out below.
