    In recent years, the application of management information systems (MIS) has been accepted by most of automotive companies as an effective way to enhance their competencies in this field. The MIS is quite helpful for management in an automotive company, as it provides an accessible and rapid tool for the communication of information involved in operation.Various management information systems have been developed and applied to address different needs in automotive industry.
    While the computer technology is advancing every day, the emphasis of the MIS in automotive industry is constantly shifting. At the early stage of its application, the information technology was mostly for computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), and computer-aided engineering (CAE), which are commonly known as C4 (CAD/CAM/CIM/CAE) systems.Later, around 1990, concepts of knowledge-based engineering (KBE) [1], integrated production development (IPD), systems engineering, total quality management (TQM), computer-aided logistics system (CALS) [2] came out. In 2000, EDS proposed an information management system named intelligent information system (IIS) combining potential of concurrent engineering (CE), knowledge management (KM) and computer-aided manufacturing (CIM), for the purpose of improving productivity in automotive manufacturing process [3]. The IIS functions in the systematic collection and monitoring of in-process metrics, and is thus helpful in identification of opportunities for product, process, and organization (PPO) improvements.

The PLM system is an implementation to integrate development, production and distribution specifically tailored to automotive industry, enabling collaborative design, data management, consulting service, and visualization of products.
    The Shopfloor-Online MES developed by Lighthouse System Ltd. is an information management implementation designed to support performance maintenance and conformance through automatic collection of data and making operational sense of it for automotive industry [6]. The system can be accessed by anyone involved in maintenance, engineering and quality departments via a web browser. Information can be shared within the organization, instead of being confined to places where the Coordinated Measuring Machines (CMMs) are housed, and will be displayed or alerted correspondingly according to different levels. The Shopfloor-Online MES has been employed by companies as Nissan, Hydro Automotive and Thyssen Krupp, and has demonstrated its benefits in data collection and sharing.
