The public figure I want to choose to analyze is Julie Bishop, who showed up in the ABC program Q&A on March 4. Julie Bishop is the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and shadow minister for foreign affairs in Australia now. Christine is the first woman to lead a political party in Tasmania. She is known on social media for her withering stare.
In this essay, I will analyze Julie’s performance in Q&A program and also compare it to Julie’s other performances publicly in social media. What’s more, I can give some my recommendations according to the theoretic knowledge and the feelings of myself.
This talking show was about refugees and women on campus. And it was a political issue about the opposition. The audience asked the question that why the opposition took actions by vilifying refugees instead of using effective ways to protect the women who were easy to get hurt and why they just couldn’t admit it was an appeal for an election campaign to underlying racist sentiment. Julie, as the representative of the opposition, answered the question and also, other guests also joined the discussion and argued with her about this problem and her answer. Actually, she didn’t do well in this show and we will analyze this.
Still, I also choose another interview to show her interaction with others to compare with this show. In this interview, she had a good performance in the social media. The interview is named ‘Julie Bishop: On Tony Abbott, feminism &death stares’. It is about the interactions of Julie and the reporter about Julie herself. (Mamamia Team, 2012)
The interview was a success and Julie showed her wisdom during the interview. However, her performance in Q&A program was not that pleasing. We can conclude the problems. She didn’t get into the key topic quickly so the audience would get tired of that. She failed to have a good logic when arguing with the host. She was too calm and the speaking speed didn’t match the show’s speed, that’s why Tony interrupted her again and again. Tony was the host who needed to control the time of this program, so he needed to interrupt Julie’s low-speed words. Her non-verbal communication was not enough. She was always wearing a strict expression and rarely did she have a gesture.
According to the problems, some suggestions can be put out. She should get to the right topic quickly and made the speaking speed faster to get hearers’ attention. Julia can have more gestures and expressions during her talking to decrease the distance to the hearers. Moreover, be calm and confident and argue logically to convince others. Then, Julia’s self-presentation will be much better on the social media.
