    Weoftenhearorreadaboutvarioussuccessandfailurestoriesofprojects.Butwhatissuccessorfailureandwhatcriteriashouldorganisationsusetoidentifysuccessorfailure?Whatfactorsleadtoasuccessfulorfailureproject?ClelandandIreland[2004]arguethatsinceeachindividualorgroupofpeoplewhoareinvolvedinaprojecthavedifferentneedsandexpectations,theylikelyinterprettheirproject’ssuccessinthecontextoftheirownwayofunderstanding.Mosttimestheirassessmentisnotinfluencedtoanygreatextentbythewiderpublicperception[LimandMohamed,1999].Thomsett[2002]providesasanexample,theSydneyOperaHouseProject.TheSydneyOperaHouseprojectwent16timesoverbudgetandtook4timesaslongtofinishashadbeenoriginallyplanned.However,thefinalimpactofthecompletedprojectwassobigthatnoonerememberstheoriginalmissedgoals.Oddlyenoughtheprojectwasabigsuccessforthepeopleinvolvedandatthesametimeabigfailurefromtheprojectmanagementperspective.ThisargumentisalsosupportedbyThomasandFernandez[2008,p.733]whocontendthatwhileaprojectmaygooverbudgetandschedule[anddeemedafailure]itssuccessmaybemeasuredbytheresponsetotheactualuseoftheprojectovertime.
     
    Ontheotherhand,theMillenniumDomeinLondonwasanexampleofaprojectthatwascompletedontimeandonbudget,butintheeyesoftheBritishpeoplewasconsideredafailurebecauseitdidn’tdelivertheaweandglamourthatitwassupposedtogenerate.Inthesamewaythatqualityrequiresbothconformancetothespecificationsandfitnessforuse,projectsuccessrequiresacombinationofproductsuccess[service,result,oroutcome]andprojectmanagementsuccess[Duncan,2004].
     
    Thedifferencebetweencriteriaandfactorsisfuzzyformanypeople.TheCambridgeAdvancedLearner'sDictionarydescribesacriterionas"astandardbywhichyoujudge,decideaboutordealwithsomething"whileafactorisexplainedas"afactorsituationwhichinfluencestheresultofsomething".Thesuccessorfailureofaprojectcanbejudgeddifferentlybypeoplebasedontheirpurposesandcriteria.Itisclearnowthatcriticalfactorscanleadtoaseriesofeventswhichultimatelymeettheoverallsuccesscriteriaoftheproject,sotheyshouldn’tbeusedassynonymousterms.
     
    KateDavis[2013],RogerAtkinson[1999],andFarzanaMir&AshlyPinnington[2013],provideotherinsightsintothistopicandsuggestmanyothercriteriaforsuccess.
