    Assignment 2 Feasibility Study
    50 marks
    PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT
The purpose of this assignment is to:
    • Provide students an opportunity to deeply understand advanced construction technologies / products
    • Encourage creative thinking and systematic perspectives
    BACKGROUND
“The world is changing faster than ever before. Consider just one of the global megatrends shaking up the construction industry: the population of the world’s urban areas is increasing by 200,000 people per day, all of whom need affordable housing as well as social, transportation and utility infrastructure. In the face of such challenges, the industry is almost under a moral obligation to transform. Its transformation will have transformative effects elsewhere: on the wider society, by reducing construction costs; on the environment, by improving the use of scarce materials or by making buildings more eco-efficient over time; and on the economy, by narrowing the global infrastructure gap and boosting economic development in general.
While most other industries have undergone tremendous changes over the last few decades, and have reaped the benefits of process and product innovations, the Engineering & Construction sector has been hesitant about fully embracing the latest technological opportunities, and its labour productivity has stagnated accordingly. This unimpressive track record can be attributed to various internal and external challenges: the persistent fragmentation of the industry, inadequate collaboration with suppliers and contractors, the difficulties in recruiting a talented workforce, and insufficient knowledge transfer from project to project, to name just a few.
The industry has vast potential, however, for improving productivity and efficiency, thanks to digitalization, innovative technologies and new construction techniques. Consider the rapid emergence of augmented reality, drones, 3D scanning and printing, Building Information Modelling (BIM), autonomous equipment and advanced building materials – all of them have now reached market maturity. By adopting and exploiting these innovations, companies will boost productivity, streamline their project management and procedures, and enhance quality and safety. To capture all this potential will require a committed and concerted effort by the industry across many aspects, from technology, operations and strategy to personnel and regulation.”

    ASSIGNMENT TASKS
    Task 1: Group work – 40 marks
Students (as groups) are required to select three to five advanced construction technologies / products which they think potentially are applicable in the Case project (the same case as Assignment 1). This assignment requires students (as groups) to develop a feasibility report on the application of BUIL1264 S2 2016
the selected technologies / products in the case project. The key consideration is that the selected
construction technologies / products should help to increase project productivity and sustainability
during the whole project lifecycle (i.e. design, construction and operation).
When developing the feasibility study, students should consider:
    • Legal perspective - What are the legal requirements regarding applying the technologies /
    products in the case project?
    • Financial perspective - What are the costs and benefits of applying the technologies /
products in the case project comparing to conventional practices?
    • Operational perspective – who will be involved in the application process and what are the
    responsibilities and requirements for them?
    Task 2: Individual work – 10 marks
Students (as individuals) are required to develop a reflective essay on “The transformation of the
construction industry in Australia”. Three aspects should be covered in this essay:
    • Current and potential challenges in the Australian construction industry
    • Future industry directions to rise to the challenges
    • Personal plans/actions (as a new graduate) to rise to the challenges
    FORMAT OF ASSIGNMENT
Please refer to the first page of the “assignment overview’ document for formatting requirements.
The Task 1 report should have 8,000-10,000 words (excluding bibliography and appendix).
The Task 2 essay should have 500-1,000 words (excluding bibliography and appendix).
    GROUPINGS
Teams of 5 members are to register by 11th Sep. 2016. A link for registration will be announced via
    BlackBoard.
    ASSESSMENT SUBMISSION
The Tasks 1 report must be submitted electronically through Blackboard as groups before 11:59pm
    23rd Oct. 2016.
The Tasks 2 essay must be submitted electronically through Blackboard as individuals before
    11:59pm 23rd Oct. 2016.
Other supporting documents (IF ANY, such as simulation models, raw data, programming etc.) should
be submitted to the lecturer - electronically via Blackboard by 11:59pm 23rd Oct. 2016. The
submission of supporting documents in itself will not affect the final marks; but in some cases, the
supporting documentation may help the lecturer better validate the reliability of your studies based on
    the supporting information.
