    Case 1: Bunnings enters UK Market
    Wesfarmers' $700 million bid for Britain's second-biggest home improvement chain has elicited warnings that the Coles supermarket owner could replicate Woolworths' Masters disaster if it doesn't assemble the right team to drive the business.
    The Homebase acquisition is still being finalised and requires approval from shareholders in the group's British owner, Home Retail Group, which is itself subject to a £1 billion ($2 billion) takeover approach from iconic UK retail chain Sainsbury's.
    Sainsbury's has until February 2 to make a formal offer for Home Retail Group and potentially secure the high-profile Argos business, which is the key target of its bid.
    Veteran retailer and Coles deputy chair Archie Norman is believed to have played a crucial role in what is Wesfarmers' first major overseas acquisition, and analysts claim the former ASDA chief will be front and centre in building a new management team.
    But recruiting the right personnel is just one of the risks associated with Wesfarmers' potential foray into Britain's hotly contested home improvement market and its plans to roll out the Bunnings brand within five years.
    Nikko Asset Management senior research analyst Craig Young warned that the success of Bunnings in Australia wouldn't necessarily translate into a competitive advantage in the UK.
    "From a Wesfarmers perspective, it's good to see them buying something that's not fully priced and not performing as well as it can," Mr Young said.
    "The negative is that retail advantages don't travel – just because you have a Bunnings business in Australia, it means zero for the UK market."

    Case 2: Debenhams unveils Melbourne store
    Australia still presents as a viable market for foreign retailers to ‘set up shop’.
    UK department Store, Debenhams, has announced the opening of a 4000 square metre store in the basement of the St Collins Lane shopping centre. This is the first entry for this UK retailer into the Australian market.
    The British retailer struck a deal last year with Harris Scarfe owner Pepkor South East Asia to open as many as 10 stores in Australia selling a range of Debenhams' private label men's, women's and children's apparel.
    Debenhams' push into the Australian market follows a well-trodden path by foreign retailers, including the Swedish H & M, the Japanese Uniqlo and British TopShop. Rival British retailer John Lewis is also opening in the Bourke Street Myer store.
    But department stores have not successfully operated on Collins Street, home to a string of local and foreign luxury boutiques, since the heyday of Georges deep into the 20th century.
    Department stores have failed to respond quickly enough to changes in shopper behaviour, emerging category killers and the growth of online shopping. The biggest question is who are the department stores targeting. When Myer is selling Miss Shop printed t-shirts at A$24.95 while upstairs, a A$299 Wayne Cooper blouse, you have to question why it is trying to be all things, to all people.
    Desperate discounting strategies also suggests department stores have lost sight of their core customer. Traditional department store shoppers don’t want “cheap”, they want “value”.
    Years of buy-outs, takeovers, mergers and rebranding have whittled a once plentiful landscape of department store competitors down to two major players, Myer and David Jones.
