    Case study, MGMT 206, 2016

    Class activity:
Below are two fictitious situations in which someone is observed to refer to, or is influenced by, a particular aspect of perception.  For the mock case study, pick either 1 or 2.  Work with a partner.

    1. A difficult and emotional client needs to be seen by a company representative. The client wants to lay a complaint about a product. John offers to deal with the client but Susan insists that she should do this as women are more sensitive than men.

    1. A young employee has been working extremely hard and has been asked to work an hour overtime to get the job done. Her boss sees her sending a text message, not realising that it is to her parents to let them know that she will be late. The boss reacts angrily, reminding the employee that cell phone use during working hours is not permitted. He adds that young people seem to think that normal rules do not apply to them. This is simply unacceptable.

    For discussion:

    • What is the nature of the organisational behaviour(s)?
    • What OB principle or principles are involved?
    • What models, theories or concepts can help you to understand this situation?
    • How might this behaviour affect the organisation and its stakeholders?

    Note:

Your case studies will be about 1000 words in length and thus will provide more detail than is provided in these fictitious examples.
