    Outline of Assessment
    This assessment consists of 2 parts A and B which are independent.
    Part B is divided in 3 additional parts
    Part A: Information booklet for a new employee:  18 marks
    Compile an information booklet that could be given to a new employee in a tourism
    workplace of your choice. Must be completed in week 4
    Part B1: Role plays 6 marks
    2 role plays, 5 minutes each, in a simulated travel agency based on the advertisement on
    the following page for a round-the-world trip. You will need to book with your trainer a time to
    complete both role plays in week 4.
    5 minutes role play student-student as customer-travel agent.
    5 minutes role play student-trainer as travel agent-senior travel agent.
    Part B2: Written project 21 marks
    Written project: hard copies required, following formats in pages 8 and 9. Must be completed
    in week 4
    Part B3:Presentation  5 marks
    5-minute presentation about your project.You will need to book a time with your trainer to
    deliver it in week 4
    All 4 parts need to be completed by the assessment due date. Part B goes in order so you
    need to first complete part B1, to gather information, next part B2 to do research and
    only then finally part B3 to present your findings.
    Verbal instructions will be given by your trainer on the assessment hand out day regarding
    all parts of this assessment as well as check-lists and marking criteria.
    PROJECT
    Part A
    Research and collate information on the different sectors of the travel and tourism industry.
    Compile an information booklet that could be given to a new employee in a tourism
    workplace of your choice (hotel, travel agency, airline, tour operator, etc) to help them gain a
    better understanding of the travel and tourism industry in Australia.
    The first step will be to choose a type of business where you will be the supervisor. Pick
    something that you are familiar with: receptionist in a hotel, travel agent in a travel agency,
    tour guide in a tour operator, flight attendant in an airline, information officer in a tourist
    information office…It has to be a tourism business.
    Companies offering the same type of products will have very different profiles. If we look at
    for instance Emirates and Jetstar or The Hilton and YHA backpackers, they will have very
    different quality standards, recycling policies, overbooking policies, technology used etc..
    You only need to focus on one, either real or imaginary company.
    Next you need to prepare a 2 pages information pack for a new employee that will start
    working under your supervision. Since the person is new, we need to advise them not only
    about how to do their job competently, but also about the general rules in our company.

    The layout of the booklet needs to have the following sections/chapters.
    1. Name 3 different sectors of the travel and tourism industry with which your company
    interacts, including their interrelationships and the services available in each sector.
    As an example: If your business is a hotel, you may liaise with transportation, tour

    2. Name 3 environmental issues and requirements, including but not limited to: the
    management of air quality, water quality, waste, recycling etc. As an example: How
    does your company recycle? How many types of bins are available? What is the

    3. Name 3 work ethics required to work in the industry, including but not limited to:
    confidentiality, overbooking, consumer protection etc. As an example: In case of
    overbooking, what are the steps to follow? How do you ensure total confidentiality of
    your customers’ details? What is you policy on customers’ complaints?

    4. Name 3 relevant eitherlegislation, codes of practice or quality assurance practices,
    including but not limited to Equal Employment Opportunity, accreditation, licences

    Part B1: ROLE PLAY:
    Role play 1: Student-student as customer-travel agent
    You need to gather information from a potential customer who walks into your travel agency
    enquiring about a round-the-world trip. Please see advertisement on the following page.
    In pairs, each studentwill take turns playing one of the roles for 5 minutes. Customer and
    agent, designated by your trainer will role play in a simulated retail travel agency using the
    brochures available in the classroom.
    Your customer would like to travel around the world on a 21-day holiday. They want to
    depart on the 1 st of November this year, but they need only flights.
    In your role play, you must question your partner to find out what 4 international and 1
    domestic destination they would like to visit and discuss how long they plan to stay in each
    city. You must include at least:
      Five cities (four overseas and one in Australia other than Sydney)
      Visiting at least three different continents
    Role play 2: Student-trainer as travel agent-senior travel agent
    Once you have thedesired itinerary by your customer from the previous role play, your will
    then role play for 5 minutes with your trainer who will act as a colleague. Seek advice from
    your trainer about this planned itinerary and get feedback from your trainer in order to start
    your project.

    For satisfactory results, the student will be able to demonstrate assertiveness, active

    this scenario. Your trainer will assess you on the checklist that you will be observed against,
    which is attached in page 8.
    Background scenario: Advertisement for a round the world trip
    You work as a travel agent in a travel agency located in Sydney CBD which specialises in
    round-the-world holidays. A customer responds to the following advertisement:
    You can now book your round-the-world trip without wasting hours of effort deciphering
    round the world airfare rules. Leave that up to the experts! All you need to do is work out
    where you want to go around the world along with an idea of proposed dates or durations
    and we can match that up to the best round-the-world ticket for you. It's that easy!
    So now the real question is...where in the world do you want to go? Do those destinations fit
    into a round-the-world trip? The most important thing is that your itinerary includes travel in a
    continuous direction between continents and that your travel has you crossing both the
    Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans.
    Don't worry if that sounds a bit complicated, just get an idea of a few destinations around the
    world that you wish to visit and come to see one of our experts who will help piece it together

    Part B2: WRITTEN PROJECT
    You need to search for information for two different customers:
      Customer 1: Your customerfrom the previous role play, Part A, who wants to travel
    on a ROUND THE WORLD TICKET in economy class.
      Customer 2: Your customer’s aunt,who will accompany your customer on the entire
    trip but will not visit the last city and will fly directly back to Sydney. She will fly
    business class on all flights instead of economy.
    To book them go online to www.oneworld.com
    You need to prepare and print a written information pack for your clients. For flight
    information please follow the format in page 10, additionally, for destination information a
    table format is suggested, please see attached example on page 11
