Corporate scandals and their causes
Review a sample of corporate collapses over the last 15 years. These scandals could have occurred in any part of the world. The source of information for these scandals should primarily be from a list of accounting journals although other reliable sources are permitted. The list of accounting journals will be provided to you as a separate attachment.
Form yourselves in groups of 4 as a priority. Some students due to the numbers in each tutorial may end up with a group of 3. This would be limited to 1-3 such groups in each tutorial depending on their enrolment numbers. Please select a leader for each group. The leader is to provide the names of the group members to the tutor by the end of the 3rd week.
Each group of is to select 2 corporate scandals and provide a summary report of them.. In each of your summaries, provide:
1) a detailed explanation as to what were the causes that contributed to the corporate collapse and what is the status of the company now. Identify these causes under the category of (i) board weaknesses, (ii) management / internal control weaknesses, (ii) external auditor weaknesses and (iv) any other pertinent reasons as applicable.
2) If you find external auditors as a contributory factor to the collapse, explain their weaknesses and the consequences of it (e.g. detailed information of the reasons they were sued, charged in a court of law, etc).
3) Provide an overall conclusion – based on analysis of both cases. In your conclusion include information as to the impact these scandals had on the profession or on respective countries governance regulations, corporations law and how did the identified weaknesses relate to the International Accounting Standards/Australian Auditing Standards if applicable i.e. identify how the standards if followed could have helped to avoid the problem or minimise damage
It is important that you provide detailed explanations as to what is required and a list of references used to demonstrate the originality and extent of your research to obtain appropriate marks. Your source could be from several journals and if you use information from other sources to complement your analysis, please ensure you reference them. Examples of corporate scandals you may choose from include: Lehman Brothers, Parmalat, Satyam Computer, HIH, Olympus, Volkswagen, etc. There are numerous others that you may find. You are particularly encouraged to analyse newer corporate scandals that have occurred in the past 6-7 years. It is important that you choose a scandal that has been well researched to give you the appropriate information you require to complete your report.
Maximum pages for your report are 10 pages excluding the references and the Assignment Cover Page– that is a maximum of 5 pages of 1.5 spacing (Times Roman font of 12) for each corporate scandal and the discussion on what is required.
An important part of the exercise is to undertake the research of reviewing and selecting the 2 corporate collapses in groups. Please appoint a leader for the group who will be responsible for coordinating the work done and also submitting the assignment via Turnitin. Please also hand in a hardcopy of your final version that was submitted to Turnitin to your Tutor for marking.
You are encouraged to use the Library resources. Students will have access to the journals though the online facility of the RMIT library.
The criterion for marking is as follows:
Quality of content/ argument 14 Marks
Evidence of research through appropriate referencing of journals 3 Marks
Clarity of presentation/correct grammar, etc. 3 Marks
Total Marks for written assignment 20 Marks
Please start working on your assignment immediately as it takes time to gather the information and
summarise in in the form of the report required. You will have ample time to prepare the report as
you need to only submit the report at the end of week 10 (September 30th midnight). During this
period please feel free to consult me or your specific tutors if you have any queries. We will monitor
your progress on the assignments over the weeks to ensure you submit them by the due date.
