    TRIMESTER1              2016         ASSIGNMENT

    Due Date: 20.05.2016            Marks: 20%

    Introduction

This assignment requires you to analyse a given data set, draw conclusions from your analysis, and convey your conclusions in written form to a person with a very modest knowledge of statistics. You are also required to use some of the capabilitiesofSPSS for statistical analysis.

The assignment should be completed and submitted as a group assignment unless permission to submit an individual assignment has been received from your lecturer.

Ø    The number of students in each group should be no greater than three. Your group should meet to discuss fully the analysis required and should also review the memorandum before submitting.

Ø    Submit one printed copy onlyper group for marking.

Ø    Details of all members of the group must be included on the assignment cover sheet attached to the assignment. All members of the group will be allocated the same mark for the assignment. It is up to each group to ensure all members do the same amount of work in contributing to the assignment.

Before attempting the assignment read the section ‘Assignment Details’ given in the Unit Outline.

The assignment uses an Excel file called Conrobar.Your lecturer/tutor will advise you on how to download the database. The data can be readily analysed usingSPSS.

When you retrieve the Conrobardatafile for the assignment you are advised to immediately save it under another name, for example, Assgn1.xls. It is important to save your files often, (e.g. every 5 minutes), so that important work is not lost in the event of a computer malfunction.

    Assignment Details

Ø  Charlie McArthy, Vice President of Planning and Development, has asked you,
Candice Bergen , Manager of Research and Analysis, and your team to analyse some data obtained from a survey of Conrobar employees.
Ø   The memo from Charlie McArthy is reproduced on page 4 of this document.
Ø   You are required to respond to Charlie’s memorandum answering all of his questions.
This is to be done by:
§    Preparing a data analysis documentusingSPSS.
§    Writing a memorandum in reply.
Task 1: Data analysis (10 marks)

You will need to examine and analyse the database thoroughly in order to prepare your answers to Charlie’s questions. To complete the analysis, you will need to do at least someof the following where appropriate:

    ·         Examine summary measures
    ·         Develop frequency tables and histograms
    ·         Develop contingency tables (cross tabs)
    ·         Producebox plots including multiple box plots where applicable
    ·         Producescatter graphs

Scatter graphs allow you to examine for possible relationships between two quantitative (numeric) variables.
Contingency tables(cross tabs) allow you to examine for possible relationships between two qualitative variables. For contingency tables involving quantitative variables, you will need to create the classes.
v  You will need to use the transform/recode feature in SPSS.

Ø    Include headings in your analysis in order that your lecturer can follow your work

Ø    For the submission of your assignment, the completed data analysis document is to be attached to the memo.

Task 2: The Memorandum (10 marks)

Prepare a memorandum answering Charlie’s questions, providing essential information and conclusions. It is important to note that the memorandum is not a detailed research report. Thus, you should be able to convey your conclusions in about 4-5 pages(max).
Keep the English simple and the explanations brief.
Your answers should be based on the analysis. However, in your memo you must not refer explicitly to the DataAnalysis part of the submission. This analysis is kept by you for future reference and will not be seen by Charlie. If you feel it may help your explanation, you may include some suitable tables in the memo, but do not include any charts in the memorandumexcept for a bar chart and or pie chart if appropriate.
When writing your memo answer the questions in the same order as they are asked in the memo to you. Number your answers.

As a professional business person, the accuracy and readability of your business communications are of utmost importance to your career. With this in mind you will be assessed on your ability to interpret your analysis correctly and on your ability to convey your conclusions in simple, clear language. Marks will be deducted for any inconsistencies between your analysis and your memo.

When writing up the memorandum try not to write too much or too little.
You must decide the right balance. In summary, your memorandum must be:

    ahighlyreadable, understandable,plain languagedocument
    it must beuseful, accurate, andinformative
it mustaddress all questions raised in the originating memo

§  There is no need to make any recommendations in the memo unless you are specifically asked to do so.
§  Refrain from expressing your opinions about your analysis, simply relate
the information as determined by the analysis.
§     Let the statistics and or parameters speak for themselves.

    Memorandum

    Date:       02.01.2014
To:          Candice Bergen, Manager of Research and Analysis
From:      Charlie McArthy, Head of Human Resources
Subject:   Analysis of employee survey data

    Dear Candice

For the next meeting of theConrobar Board I have been asked to table some observations on our employees. As you know we recently conducted a question survey of a sample of 48 of our employees.I understand that you have a copy of the results of that survey.

We would appreciate it if you could carry out some statistical analysis on those results and respond to this memorandum by answering the 8questionsI have listed below. Your response will enable me to prepare a paper for the meeting.

Just a reminder about the wording of your memorandum:we would prefer that you present your comments in a non-technical format. Statistical terminology can be confusing to the lay person.

However in anticipation of your report I have distributed a glossary of relevant statistical terms to some of my staff. The following terms may be included in the memo without the need for any explanation as to their meaning:

    mean/average
    median
    mode/modal class
    outliers
    standard deviation
    inter-quartile range
    linear/non-linear relationship
    coefficient of determination

If you intend using any other statistical terms in the memo, a very brief and simple explanation of their meaning would be appreciated.

      (i)   female employees  (ii)  male employees

      (c)     At the 95.0% significance level, can we conclude that there is a difference in mean
Productivity between males and females for all our employees?

    (d)    What minimum sample size (n) would be required to estimate the population mean
Productivity with a margin of error of 10 (ME = 10) with 95% confidence?

Hint: use Explore option: AnalyzeÞDescriptive Statistics ÞExplore

    7.Age

     (a)      Please provide an estimate (95% level of confidence) of the meanAgeof all our
    employees.

    (i)   managers      (ii)   non-managers

        (c)   At the 95.0% significance level, can we conclude that there is a difference in mean
Age between managersand non-managers for all our employees?

Hint: use Explore option: AnalyzeÞDescriptive Statistics ÞExplore

    8.  Conducting a Hypothesis Test

The ABS has recently published data claiming that the mean age of all employees nationwide
working in similar industries to Conrobar is 45 years.  Evaluate the claim using a suitable
    hypothesis test.

Ø  Students will need to state the null and alternative hypotheses correctly (symbols) (memo only) and then conduct a suitable hypothesis test using SPSS (in the analysis).

Ø  Students should then copy and paste the result of the test from the SPSS output into the memo.

Ø  Students then need to use the appropriate values from the output in order to explain their decision and then write the appropriate conclusion.
