  • Referring to Wilkens and Tucci’s study on the situations of teaching generic skills for students with subjects which have various contents to learn, a particular case in the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree at La Trobe University in Bendigo would be analyzed and presented in the paper. At first, Wilkens and Tucci took pharmacy students as examples in the research to explain the importance of acquiring skills for competing in the job market, such as academic writing, critical thinking, teamwork skills and so on (Wilkens and Tucci,2014). As to Wilkens and Tucci’s statements in the paper, pharmacy students have less opportunity for improving the generic skills in their professional class because there is a lot of professional knowledge to learn in the class and the school time is limited. Therefore, the teachers or professors would not embed these skill-teaching in their class (Wilkens and Tucci, 2014). This is the reason why “Group Project” was set up at La Trobe University. Based on the analysis of the subject, the contents of “Group Project” are mainly about facilitating the students with good literature learning skills. In the process of the subject, generic skills such as writing would also be taught and trained (Wilkens and Tucci, 2014). After analyzing the meaning of the subject, Wilkens and Tucci illustrated the structure of “Group Project” and the corresponding function of each part. Following by the analysis, three familiar courses in other universities and its situations were also demonstrated to prove their judgment on this kind of subjects. Moreover, based on the courses they listed in the paper, the authors summarized the factors in the courses which could be devoted to the future development of the students on their generic skills. To sum up, skills needed by the job market including learning new knowledge, academic writing, critical thinking, leadership and teamwork should be paid attention to in the process of cultivating students in universities.
