  • Explore how the concept of crossing boundaries helps to create horror in Gothic stories.
    Introduction
This essay aims to explore how the concept of crossing boundaries helps to create horror in Gothic stories. Throughout the essay, the structure is divided into three parts. In the development, this essay will first make a brief introduction of the origin of Gothic, combined with the history and literature and describe the features of the Gothic literature. Secondly, it will focus on the novel Dracula and specifically dissect on the two points about crossing boundaries. The first issue is about the supernatural phenomenon that by quoting the text from the novel, it will display how the element of supernatural events creates horror. The second issue is about the death, life and the undead among which the undead will be put in priority and mainly expound on it by virtue of the texts from the novel. The final part is the conclusion.
Gothic is a type of art which specifically referred to that in the middle age, from the 5th century to the 15th century. According to Kalantzis, M.,the arousal of Gothic literature should date back to the 3rd century when the German Gothic invaded Italy, tore apart the Rome Empire and launched a massacre. In the 15th century, stimulated by an aim to revitalize the ancient Rome Culture, the Italian launched a campaign globally known as Renaissance (Kalantzis, 2006). Since the Italian felt hatred for the past Gothic’s cruel behavior to their ancient culture and people, they called the artistic style in the middle age as Gothic, with a meaning of brutality. In the History of literature, it indicates that the Gothic artistic style features as terror, super-nature, death, decadence, witchcraft, old castle, abyss, dark night, curse, vampire, bat and etc. (Berry, 2008). The Gothic artistic style is saturated with darkness, horror, lonely, and despair and focuses on the edge between divines and evilness. In the period when romanticism dominated, the Gothic novels reached their pinnacle but it did not portray an ideal and utopian world as what the Romantic artistic did, but made a deep research into the society by revealing the evilness and darkness of the people and society.

    Conclusion
Generally speaking, in the novel Dracula, Bram Stoker employed some concepts of crossing boundaries such as supernatural scenes, Undead and etc to create various horrors. It can not be denied that the hooraying effect is successfully conveyed throughout the story. It is one of the typical representatives of Gothic literature and worth such a high prize. To sum up, throughout the essay, starting from the fundamental description of the origin of Gothic and the characteristics of Gothic, the essay then particularly focuses on the two issues concerning about crossing boundaries and at last comes to an end.
